Using RegEx (Regular Expression Extractor) with JMeter

JMeter, the most popular open source performance testing tool, can work with regular expressions, with the Regular Expression Extractor. Regular expressions are a tool used to extract a required part of the text by using advanced manipulations. Regular expressions are popular when testing web applications because they can be used to validate and to perform operations on a response from a web application.

In JMeter, the Regular Expression Extractor is useful for extracting information from the response. For example, when you request a page and then need to get a link from the page that was downloaded. Another use case is saving the extracted information to a variable, so it can be used later on in the performance test, for example when testing an application that uses token authentication, like CSRF/XSRF.

In this article I’m going to share how to use the Regular Expression Extractor in JMeter.

I created a very simple test-plan, look at Figure 1:

You may notice one unknown element in the image; it is the Regular Expression Extractor post-processor. Let's look at it more closely, in Figure 2:

Regular Expression Extractor Syntax

When configuring the regular expressions in JMeter, use the same syntax as Perl5. But there is one very important difference between JMeter and Perl regexps processing. In Perl you have to use the “//” delimiter to specify regexp. So, the regular expressions reg might appear like this: ~/regular_expression/. But you cannot use “//” for the same purpose in JMeter, otherwise the regular expression will be parsed literally, and not logically. So, if you are using grouping in a regular expression, use the “()” parentheses to separate one group from another.

Configuring the Regular Expression Extractor

Now I will shortly describe all of this element's fields.

“Apply to” radio button

You can choose whether the regular expression will be applied to the main sample results, to the sub-samples/embedded resources, or both.

The possible options are:

Main sample only - only applies to the main sample
Sub-samples only - only applies to the sub-samples
Main sample and sub-samples - applies to both main sample and sub-samples
JMeter Variable - the expression is applied to the filled in variable

“Field to check” radio button

You can choose which field the regular expression is applied to. The possible options are:

Body - the body of the response. The content of your web-page, excluding headers, will be parsed with the regular expression.
Body (unescaped) - the body of the response, with all HTML escape codes replaced. Note that HTML escapes are processed without regard to context, so some incorrect substitutions may be made.
Headers - the headers of the response or the request
URL – the URL of the request
Response Code - e.g. 200
Response Message - e.g. OK

Name of Created Variable - the name of the variable where the parsing results will be saved in JMeter.

Regular Expression - fill in the regular expression to test.

Template - choose the group you would like to extract from the regular expression. '$1$' will extract group 1, '$2$' will extract group 2, and so on. $0$ will extract the entire expression. For example, if you have the word “economics” in your response and you search for the regular expression “(ec)(onomics)” and apply template $2$$1$, then in the output variable you will receive “onomicsec”. If you apply template $0$, then in the output variable you will receive "economics".

Match ¹. If there is several character sequences, allows specifying, which variant exactly should be used. Important note. If you set “Apply to” to “Main sample and sub-samples” and specify “Match ¹” = 3, than JMeter will select matching sequence from the 2nd sub-sample because 1st will be main sample. If zero is specified, JMeter will choose a match at random. If you specify negative number, e.g. “-2”

If the match number is set to a negative number, then all the possible matches in the sampler data are processed. The variables are set as follows:

refName_matchNr - the number of matches found; could be 0

refName_n, where n = 1,2,3 etc - the strings as generated by the template

refName_n_gm, where m=0,1,2 - the groups for match n

refName - always set to the default value

refName_gn - not set

Indicates which match to use. The regular expression may match multiple times.

Use a value of zero to indicate JMeter should choose a match at random.

A positive number N means to select the nth match.

That’s all about options of Regular Expression Extractor. And now I will show a couple of practical examples. In all examples I will use the same URL for extracting string by regexp, see Figure 3.

After extracting string it will be put to variable $pageLink and used in “pageLink” HTTP Request as it displayed in Figure 4.

Searching by word. If you need to extract string with regular expression that is a single word than fill Regular Extractor as in Figure 5.

After executing “tut.by” request and extracting regexp, we will get the following $pageLink = economics, and that will be used in “pageLink” request, Figure 6.

Using groups. You can move parts of regular expressions using groups. For example, you need to find word “economics”, but before putting it to $pageLink you want to rearrange parts of word. Look at the Figure 7 for the syntax

And what we’ll have in View Results Tree

Using classes in regexps. Regular expressions can use classes of characters. For example, [0-9] means “any of numeric symbol ”. If I set regexp as in Figure 9, than I will receive the 3rd appropriate result from response body.

“{5,6}” means that result should contain no less then 5 and no more then 6 characters. And what we will have in View Results Tree in Figure 10

Using “^”. “^” means inversion, e.g. regular expression [^0-9] will look for non-numeric symbols. So, I’ll set regexp as in Figure 11

We caught “carriage return” symbol and this is a reason of java.net.MalformedURLException. To repair regexp I’ll add “<” before it and restart test. Now it’s ok.

Of course, I cannot cover in one article all possible and impossible cases about using regular expressions. For more information you can refer to JMeter Regular Expressions Tutorial which has exhaustive information.

JMeter uses Jakarta ORO for regular expressions processing. You can quickly test your regular expressions using Jakarta ORO Demonstration Applet which is the fastest way of seeing result matches/groups/etc.

The request where I need to replace the account number looks as below (transferFundBean.fromAccount):

And the response of the page where the values come are as below. Pic1 shows the account numbers and Pic2 shows the months. I need to capture only the account number and use randomly. (between <option value=" and ">)

I tried as below and many other combinations of the regex:

But everytime , I get everything getting captured :

Hi, Thanks for a great article. I am trying to retrieve all the distinct values that are captured in response. Issue is, that some of the values are repeating itself 2,3, 5 and even 7 times. There is no pattern in how many times the values are repeating itself.

I have used below regex, and using values like ${ResidentDocumentId_1_g1},${ResidentDocumentId_3_g1}, etc. Is there a way I can get only the distinct values?

Hi Ishan,

Currently, there is no way you can get only the distinct values from the regex results.

You can try and use Match number = 0 to get a random results, but you need a add a java code for that.
I can try to help you, so if you can add an example for how the request response looks like before the regex extractor please?

Match No.: 1
Default Value: NotFound

But the "relationid" is fetching as "NotFound".

Please help me with the Regular Expression to fetch the "relation_id" "18" with reference to the "modulename":"Deals".

Adding .* in the expression between the 2 parts will combine them together.

Please use the following regex expression:

"relation_id":"(.+?)".*"modulename":"Deals"

For the above expression, I'm getting "NotFound".

What is wrong in the expression? Is this a special behavior when the response comes with \"id\":43,? Am I missing something here?

Hi John,

Since the backslash acts as an escaping character in the regex, you need to escape it, so if you use double backslash, it will work for you:

\\"id\\":(.+?),\\"is_active\\":\\"1\\"

BlazeMeter is Simply Awesome!

I have a question regarding the regular expression and its usage.

Assume I have added the regular expression to extract all the ids from the list view response and the Regx variable extraced all the ids arround 25 as below.
```
listid_1=6038
listid_2=6039
listid_3=6036
listid_4=6037
listid_5=6040
listid_6=6041
listid_7=6043
listid_8=6042
listid_9=6045
listid_10=6046
listid_11=6047
listid_12=6044
listid_13=6048
listid_14=6049
listid_15=6050
listid_16=6053
listid_17=6051
listid_18=6052
listid_19=6054
listid_20=6057
listid_21=6058
listid_22=6059
listid_23=6055
listid_24=6056
listid_25=6060
```
Case1: Let's say. I will run the script for 1 thread/user and would like to randmoly pass the listid extracted from the regular expression out of 25 ids. i.e, may be 1st id or 20th id or 25th id.

Is this possible to achieve? If there is a solution, kindly suggest?

Case 2: Let's say, I will run the script for 25 threads/users and would like to sequentially pass the listids extracted from the regular expression to each user. i.e, 25 id's are extracted, when I run script for 25 users, for each user different listid should be passed in the response.

How can I achieve this? Kindly help.

Hi Raghu,

Regarding your two cases:

Case1: In order to use a random value from the output list, you have a clue in the Jmeter Match No. name: (0 for Random), so in that case, put 0 instead of (-1).

Case2: There is a build it variable in Jmeter with the thread name - https://jmeter.apache.org/usermanual/functions.html#__threadNum, so you can actually use that to get the specific value as ReferenceName_${__threadNum}

Coming back to you, I just now relized you have more data at the beginning of the string, so please add .* at the start of the expression, like so:
.*\\"id\\":(.+?),\\"is_active\\":\\"1\\"

So now you'll have something like:
tem_id_1=43
tem_id_1_g=1

Case1: In case 1, the script contains as below.

```
I have added the regular expression to the HTTP Request 1(Assume it's a list view contains 10 records) and the resonse of the HTTP Request 1 extracts 10 listids extracted through the regex as below.
```
List View Record IDs Extracted By The RegEx:
listid_1=6038
listid_2=6039
listid_3=6036
listid_4=6037
listid_5=6040
listid_6=6041
listid_7=6043
listid_8=6042
listid_9=6045
listid_10=6046
```
Here, I wanted to randomly pass the listid out of the above 10 to my next HTTP Request 2 in order to load the detail view of it. i.e., the listid that I wanted to pass may be any one out of the above 10.

Let's say when I run the same script with loop count = 10 and run it. There will be total of 20 Requests(i.e, 10 HTTP Request 1 and 10 HTTP Request 2), In every loop the listid which I wanted to pass to the HTTP Request 2 should be different.

Is this possible? If yes, kindly suggest.

Case 2: In case 2, the script contains as below.
```
Script/Test Plan: 
Thread Group
- HTTP Request 1
- HTTP Request 2

Thread Properties:
Number of Threads/Users = 10
Ramp up Period = 10 (Seconds)
Loop Count = 1 
```
I have added the regular expression to the HTTP Request 1(Assume it's a list view contains 10 records) and the resonse of the HTTP Request 1 extracts 10 listids extracted through the regex as below.

Everything is achievable, but I'll show you easiest ways. Pay attention that by using random values, you can have the same value again, without a uniqueness of the values. If you need uniqueness from random numbers, let me know, since it involves a Beanshell java script for that.

Now, for your cases:

Case 1: Number of threads: 1, Loop Count: 10

There is a super easy way to get a random value fro, multiple variables, using the method RandomFromMultipleVars
In your example:
```
${__RandomFromMultipleVars(listid_1|listid_2|listid_3|listid_4|listid_5|listid_6|listid_7|listid_8|listid_9|listid_10|listid_11|listid_12|listid_13|listid_14|listid_15|listid_16|listid_17|listid_18|listid_19|listid_20|listid_21|listid_22|listid_23|listid_24|listid_25)}

Since you wanted it to be random, here I used the same method RandomFromMultipleVars,

If you need the IDs to be sequential, we'll use other way:

I'm using 2 counters since there are 2 requests - one will always get the even ids, and the second the odd ids.

Add a Config Element -> Counter

The first, set it like this:

In order to use a counter or an index variable inside other variable name, we need to use the Var method like this:

The first request should have the value: ${__V(listid_${idx1})}

And the second request should have the value: ${__V(listid_${idx2})}

This way, each request gets the value of the parameter listid_XX where the XX value is obtained from the value of the idx1/2 variables.

hi,

was scrolling down through the comments here, and hoping that you would read and respond to this doubt of mine.

I am actually in search of a method of how i could extract the date passed in from my json request body , so that i can have them passed onto my influx logs, and thereby on grafana.

Could you please help me understand, if its possible using json extractor?

wasn't able to do it with json extractr as it keeps looking at the response , not at the request i have sent through.

1. Can you share your request body so I could identify its Json path?

2. If you already have the request body, why don't you have the date in the request? I mean if it can change, you can simply create a variable, and use its value in this request and the other following requests you probably want to use it there?

I've seen such issue as I have in comments, but anyway I didn't succed to manage it.

I have this kind of response:

...

And I need to use the value of second input tag. I tried different regular expression, for example:

name="PaRes" value="(.+?)"

But it didn't work. Can anyone help me with this case?

Hi Andriy,

Your regex is correct, and the name="PaRes" value="(.+?)" will catch the expression BQ...srp7V, as you can see in the attached picture.
The question, is what are the other parameters you have in the Regex extractor?

Seems that the problem was not in other parameters or in regex. It was some internal Jmeter issue, and after app reload the issue dissapeared... Now it works OK with mentioned regex.
